POLICE in Lusaka have arrested four dangerous criminals and two car breakers believed to be behind increased aggravated robberies targeted unsuspecting taxi drivers.
The four criminals led the officers to car breakers who dismantle the stolen motor vehicles whose spare parts are later sold to members of the public.
Of late, Lusaka has witnessed an increase in incidences of taxis being stolen either while parked or after being booked by criminals.
The vehicles were being stolen for the spare parts which were later sold to unsuspecting customers.
Police spokesperson Charity Chanda, who announced the arrest of the six people in a statement yesterday, said this was made on Monday night.
The criminals had on Monday evening booked a taxi from Club Zone in Matero Township to Woodlands but on the way, they asked the driver to pick up two more passengers.
When they reached Chilenje, the criminals produced an AK-47 assault rifle, pushed the driver out of the car and drove away.
The incident happened around 20:00 hours and police pursued the four after a report from the victim.
“The criminals were arrested the same night and a Toyota Harrier, an AK-47 rifle with 19 rounds of ammunition as well as a police uniform were recovered from the criminals.
“The Toyota Harrier, which was stolen a few weeks ago from Lusaka West, was being used as a back-up vehicle,” Ms Chanda said.
Ms Chanda appealed to taxi drivers, especially those operating at night, to be accompanied by other people and report all suspicious-looking people to the police.
