GOVERNMENT has embarked on a project to empower young people with land by setting up resettlement schemes for them to engage in agricultural activities countrywide.
Youth and Sports Minister Vincent Mwale said Government had rolled out the project for the youth in all the provinces.
Mr Mwale said so far, about 500 plots had been given to the youth in Mwange area in Northern Province.
He said the Government was working with provincial administrations to help identify land for the youth in the provinces.
“As you are aware, we have a youth resettlement scheme in Northern Province at Mwange where we have given out 500 plots to young people to engage in agricultural activities.
“We have applied and engaged the provincial administration to help us identify land for the young people in all the provinces,” he said.
Mr Mwale said in North-Western Province, about 10, 000 hectares of land had been reserved for a youth scheme.
He said Government was still waiting for a response from other provincial administrations on how far they had gone in identifying land meant for the resettlement schemes.
Mr Mwale said the Government was committed to empowering young people through land and giving them the necessary survival skills.
He said the ministry of Youth and Sports was working with the ministry of Agriculture to help impart agricultural skills to the youth.
He said the ministry would help find a market for any of the agricultural produce that the young people would produce.
