A COUNCILLOR in Lusaka has said Maploto area in Chilenje Township in Lusaka will be demolished with more than 30 families relocated to other places due to poor infrastructure.
Area councillor, Margaret Zulu said Mapoloto residents were sharing one lavatory, bathroom and one tap, hence posing a health risk in an event of a water or airborne disease outbreak.
She said the decision was reached during a council meeting.
Government also approved the decision to raze the slum to pave the way for modern structures.
“It is very important for residents to stay in a clean and safe environment so that they are not exposed to water and airborne diseases in order for them to work and contribute in developing the nation,” she said.
Ms Zulu said the process of shifting the affected people was delayed due to transfers of personnel at the ministry of Lands, but assured that the process would be expedited.
Some residents of the area said despite the poor conditions, Mapoloto was safe and that they were not comfortable to be moved to any other place.
“We have stayed here throughout our lives. I do not know why we have to be moved because most of us are used to this kind of setup.
“We are fine, and that being the case let them build toilets and sink boreholes,” said one resident.
Some residents welcomed the councillors’ move and asked to be taken to safer places.
