THE United Party for National Development (UPND) is holding consultative meetings with would-be alliance members from other opposition political parties.
Meanwhile, Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) president Nevers Mumba has said his party will get into an alliance as the political environment changes following amendments to the Constitution.
“Depending on what party leaders say, we (MMD) might get into an alliance especially that the political scenario has changed in view of the Constitution,” Dr Mumba said.
UPND deputy spokesperson Edwin Lifwekelo said in an interview that his party was willing to work with parties that it shared similar aspirations with.
“There are consultations going on with would-be alliance members, but I cannot reveal their names as it is too early to do this,” he said.
Last week, UPND president Hakainde Hichilema announced his party’s openness to form an alliance with any political party that had the same ambitions and aspirations for the Zambian people.
On the other hand, the Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) spokesperson Antonio Mwanza said his party had no intentions of getting into any alliance but would go it alone to contest the elections.
The FDD was confident of winning the polls and therefore, it is not necessary to form an alliance with other parties.
“We are confident enough, we will go as a single independent entity come elections and we will do extremely well,” he said.
