THE United National Independence Party (UNIP) on the Copperbelt has praised President Edgar Lungu for delivering a Constitution that addresses the aspirations of the people.
Provincial vice-chairperson Brian Chishimba said assenting to the Constitution Amendment Bill was a landmark step as the document met the aspirations of the people.
Mr Chishimba said in an interview in Kitwe yesterday that it was clear that during previous attempts, the Constitution sought to address issues that represented the aspirations of the nation.
“This time around, the Constitution has addressed issues that represent the aspirations of the people such as the 50 per cent plus one vote, the presidential running mate and the dual citizenship,” Mr Chishimba said.
He said all the issues which had been major concerns of the people had now been addressed.
Mr Chishimba said there had been attempts to formulate a people driven-constitution from the time of first Republican President Kenneth Kaunda and all those processes for unknown reasons, did not yield the desired results.
“All the previous Heads of state have talked about a people-driven Constitution, but never delivered and so it goes to show that President Lungu has scored by giving the nation a constitution that meets the aspirations of the people,” Mr Chishimba said.
