THE North-Western Council of Elders has urged the Government to translate constitution amendments into local languages to help people understand the new changes.
President Edgar Lungu on Tuesday assented to the amended Constitution in the presence of thousands Zambians who attended the event at Heroes Stadium in Lusaka.
Council of Elders chairperson Lukas Chikoti said it was important for the amendments to be translated into local languages given the importance of the constitution.
Mr Chikoti suggested that the Constitution should be translated into the seven main local languages used in the country.
“The Constitution is an important document that all people should understand . For it to be well understood there is need to translate it into the local languages so that people who cannot understand the content in English can have an opportunity to read it,” he said.
He said once the amendments were translated into the local languages it would help traditional leaders discuss and explain better to their subjects.
Mr Chikoti said the document should be embraced by all well meaning Zambians.
He said the move by the President to assent to the amended Constitution was a true indication that he was committed to delivering the governance agenda to the expectation of the people.
