A THIRTEEN-year-old girl of Chief Machiya’s  area in Mpongwe District on the Copperbelt, has been killed by a crocodile and the community only managed to retrieve her upper body.
The girl identified as Maggie Siangelwe was killed by the reptile on Tuesday while fishing with friends in the Kafue River near the pontoon.
Luswishi  Ward councillor Boniface Chushi confirmed that the girl was killed by a crocodile while fishing with her friends around 14:00.
Mr Chushi who is also Mpongwe council chairperson said members of the community only managed to retrieve the upper part of the girl’s body the next day.
“I received a report that a girl in Kasongo Ward has died after being attacked by a crocodile. The girl went fishing with her friends and she was attacked in the afternoon,” he said.
He appealed to the Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) to consider cropping the crocodiles that have continued to attack people and livestock in the Kafue River.
Mr Chushi said the increase in the number of people being attacked by the reptiles posed a danger to the community.
He said ZAWA should find means of cropping crocodiles in order to help the people in the area conduct their day to day activities without any fear.
