THE newly-constructed police post in Lusaka’s Garden Township has been handed over to the community in the area which was previously a hive of criminal activities.
Mandevu Member of Parliament (MP) Jean Kapata officially handed over the police post constructed at cost of K840,000 to the community on Thursday.
The construction of the police post was initiated after the old structure was demolished by irate residents in 2010.
Ms Kapata, who is Tourism and Arts minister, however, said that the residents mobilised themselves to raise awareness on the need for a police post, hence the construction of the new facility using the Constituency Development Fund (CDF).
“The security situation in Garden was at stake as people were attacked as early as 19:00 hours. My appeal now is for the Zambia Police Service to provide a vehicle to Garden police post to enhance security in the community,” she said.
At the same occasion, deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of operations Malcolm Mulenga said the police post was essential because it would help officers maintain order and security in the community.
He said the police would be able to hold road patrols and form a neighborhood watch that would ensure criminal activities were reduced in Garden Township.
“As police, we are confident that we will win the war against crime and ensure that people do not take the law into their own hands,” Mr Mulenga said.
He assured Ms Kapata that a vehicle would be allocated to the newly-established police post.
