LUSAKA golfer Mohammed Zulu shot a six under-par 140, to win the Professional Golfers Association (PGAZ) second Pro-Am tournament
played at the Lusaka Golf Club at the weekend.
In a 36-hole event, Zulu needed a strong four-under-par last round score to fend off stiff competition from an on-fire Chilanga golfer Patrick Mwendapole senior, who blew away the course in the second round.
Zulu had started with a moderate two-under-par 71, to lie second after Day One which was led by amateur Peter Munyinya who was three strokes ahead after a 68-five-under-par.
And while Munyinya collapsed on the second day with a four-over-par 77, Zulu had a bogey-free round with four birdies to give him the title he sweated for in fending off Mwendapole.
Mwendapole threatened the course record which stands at 10-under-par by scoring a last round eight-under-par 65, which was heightened by an eagle on the 13th but with a poor first round, Mwendapole could only finish second with 142, two shots off Zulu while, Nkana golfer Beza Daka finished third with 147.
PGAZ secretary Muswema Mpolokoso expressed happiness with the tournament saying scores were improving with the locals. Mpolokoso said his association will strive to organise more tournaments for the local players.
“Scores are getting better and this is just our second tournament. We are also happy that the amateurs we keep inviting are adding value to this competition because they are coming up with some really good scores,” he said.
He was referring to Munyinya and other amateurs who took part in the tournament that saw the latter win the amateur section after shooting one-under-par 145 to relegate his Lusaka club-mate Sydney Wemba, who hit a level par 146, into second place..
Overall, Munyinya was third best on the day with Wemba just a notch off in fourth while, Daka and Ndola amateur Gabriel Chibale were joint fifth on 147.
