Police capPOLICE in Lusaka have warned opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) acting secretary general Stephen Katuka over the placement of campaign materials on the streets of Lusaka.
Mr Katuka, who is Mwinilunga Member of Parliament (MP), appeared at the Lusaka Central Police Station around 10:30 hours yesterday where he was warned against campaigning when it was not time for such an acitivity.
Lusaka Province Police Commissioner Charity Katanga said Mr Katuka was accompanied by UPND Monze Central MP Jack Mwiimbu and presidential advisor Douglas Siakalima.
“We have warned him that this should stop immediately because it is a recipe for anarchy. This should not be repeated because we are likely to see clashes among political parties if this continues,” Ms Katanga said.
She said the UPND had also agreed that the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) be engaged to ensure that such acts did not reoccur.
The opposition political party has been putting up party regalia on different streets in Lusaka, particularly the Great East and Addis Ababa roads where flags and other materials have been placed on trees and wall-fences.
Meanwhile, police in Lusaka arrested two women after one of them fired a gunshot to scare away her neighbour following a domestic quarrel.
Rebecca Khumalo, 55, who is currently in police custody, is said to have differed with 18-year-old Esther Mweemba of SOS Children’s Village before she produced a firearm and discharged a shot in apparent anger.
Ms Katanga said yesterday that Ms Khumalo, who has been charged with threatening violence, was in police custody while Mweemba was released on bond after being charged with breach of peace.
