By CATHERINE NYIRENDA –
PRESIDENT Michael Sata says the Government spent K480 million on the construction of about 780 kilometres of roads in Southern Province as of December 2013.
Mr Sata said on his Facebook posting yesterday that the development had led to the creation of a total of 1,341 jobs in the province.
The President said construction of key roads in the province such as the Bottom Road would help stimulate tourism and agricultural development in Gwembe, Siavonga, Sinazongwe, Zimba and Chirundu districts and thus create jobs for Zambians.
“The important road links underline our Government’s desire and determination to develop critical road infrastructure in the country in order to create a better Zambia for all as enshrined in the PF manifesto,” Mr Sata e said.
Among the roads being worked on are the 131.50 kilometres Bottom Road of which 40 per cent work progress has been achieved.
Others are the periodic maintenance of the Livingstone-Sesheke Road with 21 per cent work progress done so far, as well as the rehabilitation of the Livingstone city roads with 95 per cent progress recorded.
Construction of a cast in-situ-box culvert on Chisekesi-Chikuni Road across Magoye River in Monze District has reached an advanced stage with 96 per cent of the works done.
Mr Sata said works for the Simoonga-Sekute-Makunka-Kanchele and Nyawa roads had progressed at 35 per cent so far, while works for Mukuyo Chisangano via Bbondo to Chamwe had reached 30 per cent.
