THE Zambia National Education Coalition (ZANEC) has described the pilot implementation of Notice Board Initiative in Mwense District as a success.
District ZANEC focal point person Roy Lombe said this during a Notice Board Initiative (NBI) review meeting held at Nsakaluba resource centre.
Mr Lombe said the programme had promoted transparency in the utilisation of school resources as everything was pasted on the notice board.
He said the initiative, which had been piloted in 10 schools of Mwense District had helped reduce riots by pupils because they were able to see how the funds were being utilised by the school authorities.
“This initiative has helped reduce riots. Since the introduction of this programme, there are no more riots at Mwense Secondary school. Pupils are able to see for themselves how the school authorities are using the funds,” he said.
Mr Lombe said the initiative had also motivated teachers to upgrade their qualifications in order to improve service delivery to the pupils.
“The number of teachers at each school, including their qualifications are displayed on the notice board. As a result, teachers with low level qualifications are moved to upgrade their qualifications resulting in improved service delivery,” he added.
He said the initiative in the ten schools showed that the approved school grants were not regular and inadequate to meet the school requirements.
The review also discovered that most teachers had not been trained to implement the newly introduced ICT syllabi in schools.
The Notice Board Initiative was aimed at improving service delivery in the education sector and helped in budget tracking to ensure that the approved funds reach the intended schools.ZANIS
