Chifubu celebrates Uhuru day

CHIFUBU Constituency residents in Ndola have come together to organise local 51st Independence Celebrations and honour some prominent figures that have rendered assistance to the area and have an impact in the country.
Those lined up to be honoured are, late former President, Frederick Chiluba, late President Levy Mwanawasa and former First Lady Vera Tembo.
Others are, Chifubu Member of Parliament, Susan Kawandami, football coach, Wedson Nyirenda, former Health permanent secretary, Simon Miti and boxer Musonda Chinungu.
Dr Chiluba would be remembered for introducing multi-party democracy in Zambia while Dr Mwanawasa for being an area Member of Parliament (MP) as well as his desire to root out corruption during his time as the Head of state.
Ms Tembo, for her contribution through the Hope Foundation organisation and being the first female high profile person to visit Shang’ombi District of Western Province.
Ms Kawandami was the first female MP for Chifubu.
The residents have since formed  a  Community Events Organising Association, which has brought together the council, the parliamentary office, business houses and political parties with representation in Parliament ahead of celebrations on Saturday.
Chairperson of the association Joseph Samalesu said in an interview  that the local community of Chifubu had realised the need to observe Independence Day at a local level.
“At the celebrations we are honouring our own daughters and sons that have contributed to the country in various ways which benefited the constituency and the country at large,” he said.
Mr Samalesu said apart from honouring some personalities the celebrations were also being held to educate the younger generation on the importance of the country’s Independence and appreciating the contributions of local personalities.
With representation from the police, council, business houses and political parties the association, would be non-partisan, but  will endeavour to bring all people together.
Mr Samalesu said celebrations would be preceded by a march past from Isubilo area to Chifubu Grounds where marketeers from 11 markets would take part in a cooking competition with the top three going away with various prizes.
He said there would also be a preaching competition for children under the age of 16 where the top three would also win prizes.
He urged Chifubu Constituency residents to turn up in numbers as the event would be full of activities.
