Magistrate's courtBy JAMES KUNDA –

AN Immigration Department officer in Choma has been sentenced to four years imprisonment with hard labour for soliciting a K 5,000 bribe from a foreigner.
Choma Magistrate Exnorbert Zulu found Jonathan Miyanda, 55, of house number S1011, Shampande Township, guilty of engaging in corrupt practices.
Miyanda, who is also a public prosecutor at the Immigration, was arrested by the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) on April 7, last year and slapped him with two counts of corrupt practices.
ACC  public relations manager Timothy Moono confirmed the conviction  yesterday.
Miyanda was charged with one count of corrupt practices by  a public officer while in the second count, he was charged with one count of abuse of authority.
Miyanda, between April 1 and April 7, last year in Choma, corruptly solicited for K 5, 000 and received K 1, 000 from a foreigner as an inducement to discontinue a case in which the benefactor was charged with engaging in employment not stipulated on their work permit.
He abused the authority of his office in the manner he instituted criminal proceedings against some foreigners without following laid down procedure.
“Miyanda has since been remanded in prison to commence serving his four year jail term,” Mr Moono said.
