Eagles 2 Zesco 2
STUBBORN Green Eagles twice came from behind to frustrate Zesco United’s title surge in this interesting MTN-FAZ Super Division Week 26 clash that saw coach ‘Chicken’ George Lwandamina sent off the bench.
But despite the draw, Zesco maintained their nine points lead over now second-placed Power Dynamos, whom they play on Wednesday, although that lead could be cut today if third-positioned Zanaco beat troubled Konkola Blades.
Zesco lead the log on 60 points with four games remaining followed by Power while Zanaco are on 50 points.
Play-marker Clatous Chama gave Zesco the lead in the fifth minute after finishing off a pass from Misheck Chaila and the Ndola side could have doubled their advantage but Lazarous Kambole’s attempt hit the crossbar in the 12th minute.
Referee Audrick Nkole then sent Lwandamina to the stands for persistently arguing with first assistant referee Bruno Tembo in the 43rd minute and could only sadly watch Eagles level matters at the stroke of half time through a Mathews Tembo header.
Zesco started the second half stronger and it took Mwape Mwelwa just a minute to give his side the lead but the visitors failed to hold on allowing Mwila Phiri junior to level scores in the 89th minute as the Choma side moved to 33 points.
Power 2 Assembly 0
Power ended their three-match winless drought with a home win over relegation-bound National Assembly at Arthur Davies Stadium in Kitwe, reports KALUMIANA KALUMIANA.
The victory was Power’s first since beating Nkana 2-1 at the same venue on August 29 and it was Benson Sakala who opened the scoring with an unstoppable shot from outside the box to beat Sebastian Mwenge in the 40th minute.
Larry Bwalya scored the final goal deep into stoppage time of the first half when he chipped the ball over Mwenge.
Power were reduced to 10 men in the 80th minute when Lawrence Chungu was sent off for a second yellow card after a dangerous bicycle kick that left Kapembwa Musonda with a head injury.
Musonda’s injury also left Assembly, who are on 20 points, with 10 men after they had depleted their substitutes after he was rushed to hospital.
Buffaloes 2 Nkana 1
Striker Walter Bwalya missed a penalty as Jimmy Ndhlovu scored a long range wonder goal but could not inspire Nkana to victory over an ever-improving Green Buffaloes side that kept its slim hopes alive of playing continental soccer next year, reports SANDRA MWILA from Woodlands Stadium.
Stephen Kabamba gave Buffaloes the lead after heading in a Sebastian Mwansa corner in the 44th minute in front of a packed stadium as fans braved the rains that suddenly hit Lusaka city.
Nkana were given a life line in the 48th minute when defender Malan Gondwe handled inside the box but Bwalya missed the resultant kick as he shot over the goal and his side was punished as Mwansa doubled Buffaloes’ lead with a calm strike outside the box in 52nd minute.
Ndhlovu then briefly stunned the Buffaloes’ supporters when his audacious strike just near the centre made a bounce in front of keeper Davey Kaumbwa to go into the net and reduce the deficit.
Nkana continued pushing for an equaliser but Buffaloes held firm to snatch three points to consolidate fourth position on 46 points while the Kitwe side remain stuck in eighth place with 34 points.
Napsa 0 Wanderers 1
In an earlier kick-off at Woodlands Stadium, ‘Mighty’ Mufulira Wanderers moved into fifth position replacing Nkwazi thanks to a Moses Nyambe goal as they compounded Napsa Stars’ relegation woes.
Nyambe, who replaced Erick Nyambe in the 46th minute, headed in a Brain Ambuyugeni-headed flick off a Mike Katiba cross in the 52nd minute to hand Wanderers a precious win to move to 41 points and keep alive hopes of finishing in the top four.
Wanderers could have scored an early goal in the fifth minute but Lameck Silwimba shot wide while Napsa, who are fourth from bottom on 24 points, missed a good opportunity in the ninth minute when Brian Lubaba’s shot was saved by goalkeepr Joshua Manyongo.
Forest 1 Nkwazi 0
At Dola Hill Stadium in Ndola, Forest Rangers continued with their fine form, recording a second consecutive victory against Nkwazi and climbed two places up on the log into 10th position on 30 points, reports MOSES CHIMFWEMBE.
Logic Ching’andu scored the all-important goal on 53 minutes which proved enough for the home side to haul maximum points while Nkwazi dropped into sixth place with 38 points.
Nakambala 1 Rangers 0
From Mazabuka, JIM FIKOLOMA reports that 10-man Nakambala Leopards held on to a precious win which could, however, do nothing to lift them off the relegation waters.
Lameck Banda scored the all-important goal in the 56th minute after finishing a 56th minute rebound off a Venecious Maphande shot that hit the woodwork before coming back into play.
Nakambala missed a penalty earlier in the 38th minute when Harrison Kaonga handled under pressure leaving referee Aaron Simfukwe with no choice but to point to the spot.
However, Nakambala players started fighting to take the kick but captain Webby Mulenga, after grabbing the ball from Elijah Banda who initially had positioned himself to take the kick, shot the ball wide.
More drama followed as Nakambala were reduced after Moses Mapulanga was sent off in the 85th minute for allegedly using offensive language to the referee.
Nakambala are now level on points with Konkola Blades on 23 while Rangers are on 32 points.
