CHIEF Government Spokesperson Chishimba Kambwili has re-affirmed Government’s determination to build an inclusive and prosperous nation as the country clocks 51 years of independence this month.
Mr Kambwili, who is Information and Broadcasting Services minister, said President Edgar Lungu’s Government desired to see a united and prosperous country enjoyed by every Zambian.
The minister was speaking when he officially launched Zambia’s 51st independence celebratory activities on Zambia National Broadcasting Services (ZNBC) Television last evening.
The celebratory activities will start today up to October 24, when the country will be celebrating the 51st anniversary under the theme ‘Laying the foundation for a smart Zambia, finding forgiveness, repentance, compassion and love in God’.
Mr Kambwili said the theme challenged every Zambian to reflect on the destiny of the country as ordained by God and urged the citizens to unite and leave the past behind while embracing positive attitudes in all endeavours in building a strong Zambia.
“As we celebrate this year’s independence anniversary, let us thank God Almighty who, in His infinite wisdom, love and mercy has guided this nation peacefully during the past 51 years.
“We remain eternally grateful to the Almighty God for sparing our country from political turmoil and strife that have caused immense suffering to millions of people on our continent and beyond,” Mr Kambwili said.
He called on Zambians to realise that the current freedom enjoyed in the country was attained at great cost by the country’s founding fathers and mothers who sacrificed their all to defeat colonialism.
They envisioned a prosperous Zambia of equal opportunities for all in which poverty, injustice and indignity had no place to thrive.
“Independence anniversary is, therefore, a time to reflect and take stock of how far we have come, individually and collectively, in addressing these and other challenges in building and transforming our country into a better place to live in,” he said.
Mr Kambwili called on all Zambians to be proud and free and participate in various activities lined up across the country.
