I REMEMBER being young and seeing my mother and most older women then decked out in outfits that matched from head to toe.
Style was always elegant; imagine red shoes, red bag, red hat red dress.
I know a lot of women dressed like that.
It’s like there was a fashion rule saying match your clothes or die.
Those were the days when rhumba music was in vogue and I distinctly remember my late uncle Aggrey wearing a high waist trouser over moccasins dancing to Tabu Ley music.
Nowadays many people would never be seen out wearing matching outfits yet I am a little nostalgic of that era.
It shaped our need as girls to look elegant, to wear bright red lipsticks and gorgeous shoes.
To wear little high waist belts like our mothers.
Now we have the era of colour blocking which is basically pairing one colour with an another.
Whereas a long time ago wearing a different colour would have been a fashion faux pas (ukusashila) now it’s widely encouraged but one has to follow certain rules of course.
The brown belt and shoe’s rule which is essentially that when dark shoes go with dark belt that means you have to wear the same shade of shoes as your belt.
Match colours in the same family.
This means when colour blocking if you are wearing a bold colour block it with an equally bold colour.
If you are wearing a light pastel then block it with an equally pastel colour.
Bright colours go with bold hues for example an orange top with bold blue shoes.
A bold blue dress with a bright pink belt.
If you are wearing two bolds on top however then try to mix it up with a bright or pastel colour.
Have fun mix and match, however, remember that some rules should hardly be broken such as gold rarely mixes with silver.
Wear one.
