THE first-ever Kazungula District Hospital will start operating in December this year, Deputy Minister of Health Chitalu Chilufya has said.
Dr Chilufya said in Kazungula in Southern Province yesterday that the first hospital for the district would be operational in December this year.
This is when construction of the first phase would be complete.
“People currently travel to Livingstone and other nearby districts to access hospital-level healthcare. Come December, there will be no need for that because Kazungula District Hospital will be providing first-level hospital services,” Dr Chilufya said.
He said the hospital would operate before staff accommodation was complete and that members of staff would be drawn from neighbouring towns.
Staff houses would be constructed in the second phase.
He said the construction of the hospital demonstrated Government’s commitment to providing accessible health services.
Earlier in Livingstone, Dr Chilufya said upgrading the Livingstone Central Hospital was progressing well.
He said when he toured the construction of the renal clinic at Batoka Hospital that upgrading the hospital was in progress.
The Government has procured seven renal dialysis machines and other equipment and 10 health personnel have been taken to Germany for training on how to use the renal equipment.
