PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu has reaffirmed Government’s commitment to supporting Zambian sport as it helps in building a strong nation.
The President said sport was important because it unites people from different backgrounds.
He was speaking on Saturday night during the send-off ceremony of 154 football fans to Nairobi for yesterday’s 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match between Kenya and Zambia at Nyayo National Stadium.
“Sport unites us across tribe, colour and religion, and Government will continue supporting such activities,” he said.
The President said sport was good as it unites people and helped in building a strong nation.
He said Government was committed to developing sport in the country including those that some people consider minor.
President Lungu also urged sports fans to develop love for other sport disciplines other than just football.
“Next time we need to see you move in the same way to support other sports; just make sure you represent the country well that side,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Zambia Sports Fans Association (ZASFA) honoured President Lungu for his contribution to sports development in the country.
ZASFA patron Peter Makembo said his association appreciated the role President Lungu was playing in developing sport and decided to honour him.
