AFTER missing out on the medals podium four years ago in Mozambique, Zambia boxers are now eager to make an impression at the 2015 All Africa Games (AAG) in Congo Brazzaville with coach Kennedy Kanyanta promising gold.
Zambian boxers last struck medals at the 2007 AAG in Algeria with Hastings Bwalya delivering gold and Kanyanta bronze.
With draws for the 11th edition taking place today, Kanyanta said the seven boxers were eager to know their opponents and begin the quest for glory in Congo.
He said in an interview in Brazzaville yesterday that the pugilists were in high spirits and ready for battle when they enter the ring tomorrow.
Kanyanta, a 2002 Commonwealth Games gold medallist, assured the nation of gold and silver from the quadrennial continental sports spectacle.
“We last won medals in Algeria in 2007 when Hastings got gold and I had bronze. At the 2011 Games in Mozambique, we did not win anything. So this time, I can confidently say medals will rain,” he said.
Despite the boxers camping just for a month instead of 90 days, the coach remained optimistic of a good outing in Congo.
The boxers are Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games middleweight bronze medallist, Ben Muziyo, experienced lightweight Precious Makina, light-flyweight Bwalya Lumbwe, bantamweight Timothy Chesu, flyweight Emmanuel Kabwe, light-welterweight Charles Lumbwe and light-heavyweight Peter Mukenuka.
