KENYA coach Bobby Williamson is banking on skipper Victor Wanyama and home advantage to inspire the Harambee Stars’ to victory over the Chipolopolo during this weekend’s crucial encounter.
Williamson summoned the prolific Southampton midfielder to his squad that comprises experience and talent for the Gabon 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Zambia to be played at the Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday.
Wanyama missed his club’s first win of the season on Sunday but is expected to be fit for the Chipolopolo tie after suffering a stomach problem that ruled him out of training for three days at his England base.
“It is a difficult match but we are counting on the home support to drive us through the extra mile and supply us with that extra incentive,” Williamson told the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) media.
Former Kenya international Bernard Mwalala has backed Harambee Stars to down Chipolopolo on Sunday.
Mwalala told Futaa.com that the current crop of Kenyan players have what it takes to beat Zambia on home turf and ultimately qualify to the 2017 Africa football showpiece.
“We have a very good team at the moment, a blend of young and experienced players. I do not see why we shouldn’t beat Zambia on Sunday, we are playing at our backyard and we have the upper hand. I urge the boys to face their opponents fearlessly,” Mwalala said.
Meanwhile, the FKF have beefed up the Kenya technical bench by appointing David Ouma, the Harambee Starlets head coach in readiness for Sunday’s clash.
