LITTLE-KNOWN George Roberts Jr on Saturday stunned seasoned players by winning the coveted Lusaka Golf Club Captain’s Tankard tournament with an impressive score of 41 points after a day-long action.
Roberts’ title-winning 41 points was three clear of second-placed H Essa who beat Z Pandor after a count-back while Richard Phiri was fourth with 37 points but also after edging David Liyoni on a count-back.
Bob Keating, Clyde Phiri, Bob Wellman and Franca Rocci were next on the award’s list as they all finished on 36 points while Sarah Mukosa led a group of four players, who included David Morkel, on 35 points.
Then Tina Nawa joined the party with five others on 34 points.
Exciting junior Janvia Walia was the best junior player with her score of 38, which was after a count-back with K.D Phiri.
In the subsidiary awards, veteran Hilda Edwards had the longest drive for the ladies while the winner in the men’s category was Marcus Herdstrom.
Former Zambia Golf Union (ZGU) honourary secretary, Mubiana Akakandelwa
got the nearest to the pin award.
Lusaka Golf Club captain Nsama Mataka praised all the golfers who made the tournament a success and hailed the various sponsors for the support.
“Today has been a great day for golf. We had some good performance from the juniors and it is quite encouraging. The juniors’ scores were quite close to the title winners. Thanks also to the various sponsors and all golfers for making this tournament such a success,” he said.
