OVER 700 women in Eastern Province have been found with evidence of cancer of the cervix since the screening exercise started in 2012.
Provincial medical officer, Kennedy Malama said during a live programme on Breeze FM in Chipata yesterday that this was from 14,291 women screened by Chipata General Hospital, St Francis Mission Hospital and Minga Mission Hospital in the province.
Dr Malama said out of the 751 women found with cancer evidence, 627 were treated using cyro-therapy, which was the freezing of the cancer in its early stage
He said 101 women were treated by cutting off some portions from the cervix where the cancer evidence was visible.
Dr Malama said 23 women had their specimen taken to Lusaka for further tests.
He said he was happy that the majority of women who had been screened were found without any cervical cancer evidence.
He also said the construction of Chipata District Hospital on the Great East Road would start this year.
