‘MIGHTY’ Mufulira Wanderers veterans fear that the violence that ensued at Shinde  Stadium on Saturday during the MTN-FAZ Super League match against Zesco United has the potential to dent the club’s reputation built over the years.
Michael Kapembwa, a former executive committee member, condemned the ugly scenes that caused the abandonment of the Week 19 fixture in Mufulira.
Kapembwa said in an interview yesterday that the rioting fans risked denting the club’s image.
Kitwe-based referee Gladys Lengwe was forced to hastily halt the match after 31 minutes when incensed Wanderers fans started throwing missiles on the pitch with their team trailing 1-0.
“Let’s help our fans behave well during matches through educative interactions so that they can desist from interrupting play. We have to emulate Nkana fans who have transformed into better fans from causing trouble,” he said.
Benson ‘Swift’ Musonda has called for urgent action against perpetrators of violence during matches.
Musonda said in a separate interview that fans would be the ones to lose out should Wanderers be banned from playing at Shinde.
He said there should be no room for violence in modern football and that all those behind Saturday’s fracas must be brought to book.
“We do not want our team to be banned in any way. Those who were throwing stones are ignorant and they don’t deserve a place at Shinde Stadium and I think this issue must be resolved quickly,” Musonda said.
The FAZ disciplinary committee is yet to decide on the whether or not the match will be replayed.
