THE fifth leg of the Cycling Association of Zambia (CAZ) national championship failed to take off at the weekend.
This was after sponsors requested for a postponement of the Mazabuka Challenge that was supposed to cover a tough 100km terrain.
CAZ president Peter Chintu said in an interview yesterday that Zambia Sugar Company, who are the sole sponsors of the race, asked the association to reschedule the competition owing to adjustments in their programmes.
“We have postponed the Mazabuka Challenge at a later date to be announced. This is because our sponsors requested us to do so,” Chintu said.
The cycling chief said his association was considering incorporating the Choova annual racing competition into the national calendar.
This year’s Choova competition that took place on Saturday in Chipata saw Msekera’s Welela Mlauzi crowned champion for a second year running.
Chintu said the Choova race was producing talented riders who could add competition to the national championship.
“We want to make Choova Cycling competition part of the national calendar because we have realised Eastern Province produces some of the good riders who could stiffen the competition to the sport.
“Our target is to resuscitate the sport and we are happy that the corporate world has shown interest in sponsoring cycling,” he said.
