TWENTY-FIVE drivers will today hit the road in the Gomes Haulage Ndola national rally whose spectator stage will be at the Ndola Motocross Circuit.
This sixth leg of the National Rally Championship that promises sparks amongst top contenders, returns to Ndola for the first time in 20 years.
With Jassy Singh, who leads the Zambia Motor Sport Association (ZMSA) chart on 100 points out in Rwanda for the Gorilla Mountain African Rally Championship (ARC), today’s race presents an opportunity for other drivers to close the gap.
Muna Singh Junior is second on the log with 74 points and is aiming for victory to remain within touching distance of his older brother, Jassy.
“My main aim is to win the championship. I think time is ripe for me to be crowned winner of a national rally and I am not scared of the opponents because currently, I am the only one who can close the gap on Jassy looking at the points other drivers have,” Muna said.
The race will see 25 drivers compete in nine stages that will be preceded by a head-to-head qualifying round at the Ndola Motocross Circuit before the rally shifts to Nsobe game camp tomorrow.
Former Africa champion Mohammed Essa, who has had a tough year and is in distant eighth on 30 points, will be looking forward to rejuvanate his fortunes and end the calendar year on a high.
But local favourite Leroy Gomes, who sits in sixth place on the log with 36 points, will utilise every opportunity and ensure that the dominant midlands drivers return home empty handed.
Miles Monge, Geoffrey Chulu, Farook Ticklay and Chimanga Biyela are some of the drivers to look out for in the rally.
The winner of this rally will walk away with K4,000 with the runner up bagging K3,000, while the third, fourth and fifth finishers will carry home K2,000, K1,000 and K500 respectively.
