By SHAMAOMA MUSONDA –
TOP seed Manda Chilambwe and female star Sharon Chimfwembe yesterday cruised to the semi-finals of the ongoing ZSIC Midlands Open championship with relative ease.
Having been exempted from the preliminary stage of the championships, Chilambwe and Chimfwembe dismissed their opponents easily to clinch semi-final slots.
In the men’s section, Chilambwe first defeated Elvis Ngosa 3-1 before dismantling Michelle Mwanza 3-0 in the quarters to set up a tricky semi-final against fourth seed Chris Mulubwa who also sailed to the semis without much hustle.
The other men’s semi-final will be between Kundanji Kalengo from hosts Lusaka club and Nkana’s highly-promising youngster Frank Wabo.
In the women’s section, Chimfwembe, as expected, was simply in a rollercoaster mood and swept away the field and made a semi-final date with Ethel Mambwe.
Chimfwembe after enjoying a bye in the first round, defeated Sheila Musukwa 3-0 in the quarters and will hope for a straight forward semi win against Mambwe while the other women’s semi-final will be between Monica Chimese and Namwene Muchaile.
The tournament ends today.
