HEN-WOOD Foundation Zambia, a New Apostolic Church faith-based organisation, has spent more than K165,000 on income-generating activities which include the establishment of a sausage processing plant and a piggery.
A total of K75,000 has been spent on the sausage processing plant, working capital and basic business trainings in Chainda Township while another K90,000 has been spent on the piggery project.
Foundation board chairperson James Kasongo said at the launch of the Kaunda Square sausage-making project that the foundation spent K75,000 on the project targeting women from more than five townships.
“The financial support received from Nak Karitative a Germany-based church organisation worth K75,000 has been used to help the group have an income generating activity in form of sausage making,” Mr Kasongo said.
The women group has been trained in sausage making and basic business management while a shelter has been built for sausage making, pieces of some basic sausage making equipment have been bought.
Sausage-making project acting chairperson Martha Chilufya said the project would go a long way in fighting poverty and create business opportunities in the area.
“The plant would be capable of producing over 50 kilogrammes of sausage per day which is expected to double by next year,” Ms Chilufya said.
Speaking in a separate interview, foundation executive director Tebuho Yubai said the organisation funded the piggery project in Makeni, Lusaka in June 2013 which had seen more than 20 women benefit from the project.
