MANSA Municipal Council has destroyed perishable goods worth more than K60,000 belonging to Shoprite.
The food, which was declared unfit for human consumption, had gone bad after the generator used to power the refrigeration system broke down.
The situation caused most food stuff to go bad and was compounded by load shedding and low voltage being experienced in the district.
The local authority’s spokesperson Chris Mulaliki said the food stuff destroyed included fish, chickens, ice cream, and sea food.
Mr Mulaliki said Shoprite voluntarily surrendered the items to Mansa Municipal Council.
He said the council would continue conducting random checks to ensure establishments dealing with food adhered to health regulations in the sale of their products.
“The food went bad due to various factors, a broken down refrigeration system and due to load shedding and low voltage being experienced here,” he said.
