THE Lusaka City Council (LCC) has paid out K16.9 million to settle 167 retirees out of 453 former employees who are owed terminal benefits by the institution.
Town Clerk Alex Mwansa said the 167 retirees were paid their full benefits by June 30, this year, while 286 others are yet to be cleared leaving a balance of K33.96 million.
Mr Mwansa said this in a statement issued yesterday by LCC acting public relations manager Brenda Katongola.
“A total K16.914 million has been paid to retirees from January to June 2015 from a debt that stood at K53.94 million at the beginning of the year. The council now has an outstanding balance of K33.96 million to pay the remaining 286 retirees,” he said.
Mr Mwansa said the institution committed itself to paying the debt by the end of this year and the financial department has enforced mechanisms to execute the plan well.
