ZAMBIA’S female top seed, Ogar Siamupangila has been handed a tough draw at the $10,000 rich 2015 Nigeria International Badminton Championship that starts tomorrow in Abuja.
Siamupangila, who is ranked 208 in the world and Zambia’s sole representative at the competition, will square up against world number 44 Cloe Maggie of Ireland in the preliminary round of the women singles.
Siamupangila, who left for Nigeria yesterday, said she was not intimidated by Maggie’s pedigree and was geared to face the challenge.
“I know that the game will be very tough knowing Maggie’s ranking in the World but I think it’s a good opportunity for me to prove my worth in the game. I will put in my best to make the country proud and come back with positive results.
“Badminton is a game of upsets and I can pull off an upset even if I will be facing one of the best players in the world,” Siamupangila said.
She said the tournament will set the tone for her ahead of Congo Brazzaville 2015 All Africa Games slated for September.
“My main target is to improve my ranking in Africa but I think it will also keep me in shape as we prepare for the All Africa Games,” she said.
The tournament will also be part of the African qualifying series for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games billed for Brazil.
Recently, the Zambian ace moved two places up on the Badminton Confederation of Africa (BCA) rankings into sixth position after pulling off an outstanding display during the Mauritius International tournament that saw her claim silver in the women doubles.
