Lusaka Mayor to participate in Mayoral tourney

LUSAKA Mayor, George Nyendwa will join hundreds of sportsmen and women who will participate in the annual Mayoral Tournament scheduled for the Olympic Youth Development Centre (OYDC) in Lusaka.
This year’s Mayoral tournament slated for July 11, has attracted more than 150 companies and will feature 12 sports disciplines, among them football, netball, volleyball and basketball.
Other sports disciplines lined up are bottle race, sack race, track and field events like 100m sprint, 200m sprint and 400m for both male and female categories, darts, needle race, swimming, chess and pool.
The Lusaka City Council is inviting corporate organisations, government ministries, non-governmental organisations, private and government schools and individuals to be part of this exciting event this year.
According to a statement from the LCC public relations unit, participants will be required to pay K2, 000 for participating in football, K1, 600 for competing in netball, K600 for taking part in volleyball per team and K300 for the individual sport events like bottle race, sack race, 100m, 200m, and 400m and needle race, darts.
“This Mayoral tournament has grown from strength to strength over the years and this year’s event will be more exciting because the number of companies that have shown willingness to participate has increased.”
“To make it more exciting, we have the Mayor taking part in football and this will accord members of the general public and the corporate world to interact with His Worship the Mayor in a social environment,” the statement read.
The Mayoral Tournament has been held since 2008 and was normally done to honour the new mayor into office. It is a social event also meant to allow members of different sectors of the public to interact with the newly elected civic leaders.
