CHEMBE District has received K325,000 from Government for drilling 15 boreholes in an effort to increase access to clean water.
Chembe District council secretary Francis Nkhoma said a similar number of boreholes were drilled last year.
Mr Nkhoma said in an interview that the district had already received the money for the borehole project for this year.
The contractor for the project has since been identified and the works will start soon.
The boreholes are to be drilled in different localities around the district.
“Once we are done with the drilling of these additional 15 boreholes, Chembe is going to have 30 boreholes dotted in various chiefdoms and this will ensure access to clean water by the local communities,” he said.
Mr Nkhoma said access to clean water was a critical objective of the Government as the boreholes would help improve the health of the people.
He said the council had also intensified campaigns to sensitise people in various chiefdoms on the need to dig pit latrines in a bid to prevent open defecation, which was a source of water contamination in many areas.
