HUNGRY Lion, a food outlet in Solwezi has been closed after local authority health inspectors discovered that the store was selling expired drinks to members of the public.
The Solwezi Municipal officers that conducted a check at the food outlet seized more than 100 Coca-Cola caned drinks that had expired.
Council spokesperson, Thandiwe Tembo said the sale of expired beverages was against the Food and Drugs Act.
“We have seized 103 canes of expired Coca-Cola being sold to members of the public at Hungry Lion, they were selling expired beverages, contrary to the Food and Drugs Act of the Laws of Zambia. We have since closed the outlet and management will appear in court soon,” she said.
The council was forced to investigate the matter after it ordered food and an assortment of drinks from the store, only to discover that some the Coca-Cola had expired.
“It is sad to note that a big company like Hungry Lion can be selling expired products to customers, it is not fair and it is a crime. Taking expired food poses a danger to one’s health,” she said.
She said the council would continue to carry out routine inspections and ensure that restaurants and shops were operating in line with standard regulations.
Ms Tembo said other restaurants selling food and beverages should ensure they complied with the Food and Drugs Act.
