STUDENTS at the Copperbelt University (CBU) in Kitwe yesterday boycotted classes over delayed payment of allowances.
The students who gathered at the infamous ‘Monk square’ within the campus demanded to be paid in full the various allowances by the bursaries committee.
Copperbelt University Students Union (COBUSU) vice-president Miselo Mumba said the majority of students at the campus had not been paid their allowances despite the academic calendar having resumed more than a month ago.
Mr Mumba said out of the more than 5, 400 students at the campus, only 2,000 had been paid allowances which again were not in full.
He said the students were supposed to be paid their allowances on the day of registration.
“One surprising thing is that Government extended the opening date by a period of one month in an effort to mobilise resources and even after that, the majority of students have not been paid the allowances,” he said.
He said it was in view of this that the students resolved to stage a class boycott to compel university authorities to pay them allowances.
