NORTH-Western Province Permanent Secretary Amos Malupenga has urged teachers to maintain good morals and be role models to society.
Mr Malupenga said teachers should not underplay their position as role models as this had an effect on pupils who are under their custody during the learning period.
Mr Malupenga said this in Solwezi yesterday during the fourth graduation ceremony for 176 Solwezi College of Education graduates under the Zambia Teacher Education training programme.
He expressed concern over the tendency by some teachers to misbehave in the presence of pupils.
He said such bad conduct by teachers affected pupils as some copied habits such as drinking alcohol and smoking at tender ages.
“Some pupils who smoke and drink alcohol openly copy such behaviour from teachers, that is why I implore you teachers to lead by example and don’t underplay your position as role models to the pupils,” he said.
He also denounced the practice of providing examination leakage to pupils and urged parents against providing funds to their children to buy leaked examination papers.
He urged the graduates to maintain high education standards in their areas of deployment.
On the various challenges facing the institution, Mr Malupenga assured the college authorities that the concerns would be addressed through the provincial administration.
College principal Tresford Musakanya appealed for support to construct more classrooms, a library and construction of a wall fence among others.
