MMD national secretary Mwansa Mbulakulima has said the former ruling party is still strong despite the massive defections it is experiencing.
On Friday, the entire MMD provincial leadership in North-Western Province defected to the ruling Patriotic Front (PF).
Mr Mbulakulima said the MMD had structures in all parts of the country and the party is still strong.
“We are still strong, we are the only party that you can find anywhere in the country, and we are not being swallowed up by the PF,” he said.
He said the two parties were working out a system on how the two political parties will work together.
He urged members to be patient and wait for the clear direction of the party once the discussions with PF are concluded.
However, he said that there was strength in numbers and the MMD was not encouraging its members to leave.
“Leaving the party to join another is not beneficial but the members should take it easy and wait for the conclusions of the discussions,” he said.
Last month more than 300 MMD members in Luanshya led by district officials resigned and joined the PF.
