By MILDRED KATONGO –
CHINGOLA Municipal Council has acquired equipment worth K550,000 to help collect garbage in the district.
Chingola Municipal Council spokesperson George Sichimba said the equipment acquired was a backhoe loader that is used for a variety of tasks including, collecting and loading of garbage and paving roads.
Mr Sichimba said the equipment would help the local authority operate efficiently in terms of collecting and disposing of garbage.
He said the equipment, which was commissioned by the Ministry of local Government and housing last week, would also help in working on the drainage system in the district.
“Chingola council purchased a backhoe loader to help in ensuring that garbage is collected and the district is kept clean. This is a step further in ensuring that Chingola retains its status as the cleanest town,” he said.
Mr Sichimba said the equipment was purchased using part of the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) from both constituencies in the district and from other council resources.
“The local authority faces challenges in terms of collecting and disposing of garbage in the district. With this equipment in place, garbage will be collected and disposed of efficiently, leaving the district clean,” he said.
Meanwhile, the local authority during its routine inspections closed down 36 bars and four butcheries for operating in unsanitary conditions.
Mr Sichimba said this was contrary to the food and drug Act of the laws of Zambia.
