THE University of Zambia (UNZA) has donated various text books worth K21, 000 to the Kalulushi Municipal Council Library.
Kalulushi council spokesperson, Beauty Undi, said in an interview that, the gesture was part of the bid to revamp the two libraries in the district which were in a dilapidated state and not being used due to the lack of books.
Ms Undi said the books, which were received last week, would help school-going children have access to text books and change the poor reading culture in the district.
She said the text books ranging from primary to tertiary level, would go a long way in helping the children have access as most guardians in the district were retirees who could not afford to buy text books.
“As the local authority, we lobbied for the books so that we revamp our two libraries in Kalulushi and Chambishi, UNZA came on board and helped us with text books. This will help school-going children access these books. Most residents here have retired and cannot afford to buy text books,” she said.
Ms Undi said these books would not only boost the performance of the institution but equip and empower the school children in the district.
She said the libraries would now be operating and that pupils were welcome to use the facility.
Ms Undi appealed to the corporate world to emulate UNZA and get on board and give books to help reduce the poor reading culture.
“We are appealing to others in the corporate world to come on board and help in giving books, this will help break the poor reading culture in the district,” she said.
