THE Zambia women’s soccer team is confident of compensating for its failure to reach the 2015 All Africa Games (AAG) by winning the CAF African Championship qualifier against Zimbabwe in Lusaka tomorrow.
Just like Zambia, Zimbabwe too failed to make it to the AAG set for Congo Brazzaville in September and want to make a statement from the continental qualifiers.
Both teams are ultimately searching for a historic qualification to the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games.
Shepolopolo acting team manager, Belinda Chisanga said the squad was in high spirits ahead of the second round, first leg clash against the Mighty Warriors at Nkoloma Stadium.
Chisanga said the team had been training hard and was positive of winning the game against a tough opponent which Zambia faced last year.
On June 8, 2014, the Shepolopolo defeated the Mighty Warriors 1- 0 in the second leg played at the same venue to qualify for their maiden African Women Championship.
Helen Mubanga scored a goal in both legs to win the tie 2 – 0 on aggregate.
Heading into tomorrow’s clash, Chisanga said the players had adhered well to training and the team has since shifted training to Nkoloma Stadium.
“The girls are in high spirits and are very confident that they will win the match against Zimbabwe. They have been training very hard and we have no doubt of a good performance,” she said.
Meanwhile Zimbabwe’s Mighty Warriors were scheduled to arrive yesterday for the crunch match.
According to News Day Sport newspaper, the team is ready though it had some challenges with some players reporting late into camp.
Team coach Rosemary Mugadza was quoted as saying she hoped that the team continued where it had left with Ghana.
She said as long as the girls were in good state of mind, they would get a good result over Zambia.
“It’s looking good so far. We managed to train with the bulk of the players starting yesterday. We are just hoping that the girls will carry on from where they left against Ghana, performance wise. If they are in a good frame of mind, there is no reason we can fail to get a good result in Zambia,” Mugadza said.
