BRIEF-CASETHE initiative by the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) to introduce the payment of Withholding Tax by landlords is a welcome move. however, this plan needs to embrace various views from the affected parties.
Briefcase notes that already concerns have been raised on the issue of backdating the payment of the required tax and this may cause resistance, hence the need for proper and effective dialogue so that both the ZRA and the landlords reach an amicable solution.

Spare the roads

BRIEFCASE has noted that continued hauling of heavy duty equipment by most mining companies has continued to cause severe damage to the country’s road network and this is at a great cost of finances needed to rehabilitate and maintain most interprovincial roads.
Thus the call by the Parliamentary Committee on Estimates that mining companies should utilise the railway network to transport most of their equipment has been long overdue.
This call needs adherence so as to maintain the shape of the roads which already is undergoing transformation and to help boost economic value of the Zambia Railways Limited (ZRL).

Well done ZTB

HATS-OFF to the Zambia Tourism Board (ZTB) for their intense efforts to market Zambia’s tourism potential through yet another Travel Expo which commences in Lusaka on Thursday.
The Expo to run from Thursday to Saturday will attract around 1,500 tourists from both the local and international market.
Briefcase observes that at a time when tourism marketing has become a serious venture by many countries in and around the region, the ZTB has continued to marshal ways to remain afloat and ensure that Zambia claims its shares of tourists.
With vast tourism attractions, the Expo is an important opportunity to market local tourism products from various players and ZTB should continue on this important footing.
