GREEN Buffaloes have insisted that Wedson Nyirenda remains their head coach despite reports of him signing a one-year deal with Mozambican club Ferroviário da Beira.
Club general secretary Joe Nguni said in an interview yesterday that Nyirenda was still Buffaloes coach.
Nguni said the club will not dwell on rumours that Nyirenda has ditched the club until when the former Zanaco and Zesco United coach makes his intention of leaving the Zambia Army side known.
He said Nyirenda took a four-day leave to attend to a family matter in South Africa and that he was supposed to report back for work today.
“Wedson Nyirenda is still Buffaloes coach, he has not resigned as far as the club is concerned. He got four days leave that elapses tomorrow (today) and he will be expected to be on the pitch with the team,” he said.
Nguni said photos of Nyirenda have been seen on social media of him being unveiled by Ferroviário in Mozambique but will wait for him to return and state his position.
“I have seen pictures of Wedson on social media in Mozambique but I will choose not to believe because he requested for four days leave to visit family in South Africa. We will wait until tomorrow (today) if he does not report for work then we can start believing in those rumours,” he said.
Meanwhile, a check at Independence Stadium yesterday found the team conducting training sessions under the supervision of assistant coach Bilton Musonda.
The Noticias, Mozambique main daily, reported that Nyirenda signed a one-year renewable contract with Ferrovario da Beirra and has promised to turn around the misfortunes at the club.
Ferroviário parted ways with their head coach Lucas Bararrijo after a spell of bad results and signed on Nyirenda.
Club chairperson Valdemar Oliveira told the newspaper that Nyirenda was the frontrunner for the job.
“Nyirenda was always a frontrunner and has the backing of the board. He is the right person who can lead Ferroviário to the destination we want to be,” Oliveira said.
