IN THE last few weeks the country has witnessed a number of ministers and other government officials who are traversing the countryside to check on the ongoing development projects.
This is as it should be!
Indeed, given the level of shoddy works by some contractors, there is need for the government officials and the citizens to take keen interest in these works to ensure good results.
Reviving Mansa Batteries
TALKS of reviving the once buoyant Mansa Batteries in Luapula Province are welcome and bring a ray of hope for economic revival in that part of the country.
The announcement by Commerce, Trade and Industry Minister Margaret Mwanakatwe that discussions are already underway and that various avenues are also being looked at in terms of diversifying production into areas such as manganese production, attracts attention to this “white-elephant”.
CEEC debt collection?
BRIEFCASE notes with concern on the lapses by the Citizen’s Economic Empowerment Commission (CEEC) to sustain debt collections from beneficiaries of loans.
As much as there is an intervention as announced last week that debt collectors have been engaged in various parts to undertake the job, it is of concern that this kind of responsibility should be taken lightly as evidenced in 2014.
The commission registered a drastic drop of 59.5 per cent in loan recoveries reflecting a paltry collection of K11.9 million from a targeted K20 million.
