THERE is an urgent need to sort out the mess that has engulfed the Kabwe Golf Club and bring back sanity to the sport that has of late been a shining example to other sports associations.
The golfing family has of late been busy putting Zambia’s image on the world map by successful hosting of the 2015 Mopani/Redpath Zambia Open and 2015 Zambia Sugar Open tournaments as well as the ongoing Africa Junior Golf Challenge at the Lusaka Golf Club.
But all the success that the sport has enjoyed might be dented by the happenings at Kabwe Golf Club where a solution needs to be urgently found.
To get you up to speed, the 23 members at Kabwe Golf Club have petitioned their executive committee demanding for a special council meeting to determine the suitability of the Kamal Desai led team.
The members are demanding that the meeting be convened to address the alleged glaring abrogation of the constitution in the manner the club led by captain, Desai, is being run.
The members have accused the executive for allegedly circumventing the constitution by allowing invalid nominations for election to the committee contrary to the provisions of the club statutes.
Also that the executive committee filled up positions of honorary secretary and treasurer with people who were not ordinary members at the time of the appointment, claiming that such manoeuvres were injuring the tenets of good governance.
It is, however, gratifying that Desai has called for meeting at which his group will have a chance to respond to the various accusations and chat the way forward and bring back sanity.
The Zambia Golf Union (ZGU) has made a wise decision of allowing members to sort their own problems but of course with a strong warning that it does not want to see its affiliates involved in wrangles.
It is hoped that the members will resolve their various pending issues and get the sport back on track and continue being a mirror of excellence to other associations.
Away from golf, I would like to commend Oriental Quarries Boxing Promotions (OQBP) for bringing a worthy boxer like Christina McMahon to fight Catherine Phiri for the World Boxing Council (WBC) bantamweight gold title.
The fight did not disappoint despite Catherine losing out on the title because such are bouts that Zambian fans have been crying for and not against ‘fake’ opponents who just come to make quick money.
Whether OQBP will seek a rematch or not depends entirely upto them but Catherine is still young and needs to work hard so that one day she can lay her hands on the WBC gold belt.
I have heard some people suggesting that Catherine was robbed of the title but hey, we all watched the fight and the judges gave their verdict.
Boxing fans will equally be expecting to watch a good fight when Esther Phiri fights Sandra Almeida of South Arica for the Women International Boxing Association (WIBA) and World Boxing Federation (WBF) welterweight unification title fight on May 22.
Wishing you all a wonderful sporting weekend and remember to send you comments to eliaschipepo@gmail.com or elias.chipepo@times.co.zm
