ZAMBIA yesterday moved into third position after two rounds played at the ongoing 2015 Africa Junior Golf Championship.
After a poor start in the first round that saw the hosts placed fourth, the Tristan Brice captained Zambian side shifted a gear up to overtake Kenya and will now be chasing to go past second placed Zimbabwe.
South Africa have continued to lead and are in distant first with 435 points after two rounds while Zimbabwe are second with 466, just five strokes better than Zambia.
Zambia’s team manager Chris Mulenga, who went round the course encouraging hi troops, was happy with the fighting spirit shown by the team.
“This is a much improved performance we are seeing today (yesterday). You can see from Tristan (Brice) that he doesn’t want the first round to repeat itself and has fought at every hole,” Mulenga said of the South Africa based Zambian player.
Brice had under-performed on Day-One and with the rules stating that from the four players each country fields, just the top three results gets on the scoresheet, his Day-One score was kept away from the scoring sheet.
But yesterday, it was the opposite that ruled in the Zambian camp as Brice’s two-over-par 75 was the best score with Kelvin Chibuye and Gabriel Chibale six-over-par 79 joining the captain on the scoresheet while Patrick Mwendapole’s 10-over-par did not count.
This score puts Zambia on 471 points, six clear on Kenya, who were leading Zambia by a stroke on Day-One.
South Africans Marco Steyn and Dylan Naidoo were the best players of the day with one-over-par 74 each while Brice and South African Herman Loubser were a stroke off and in joint second.
The tournament continues today and ends tomorrow.
