MUNGWI residents in Northern Province have called on local and foreign investors to exploit the tourism potential in the area to help develop the district.
The area is endowed with massive tourism potential in form of rapids and small falls.
Mungwi residents’ representative Henry Mwamba said it was time the district benefited from its tourism attractions.
“If we can have investors to develop tourism resort facilities and some marketing of tourism attractions we will be warm and dry,” Mr Mwamba said.
He said areas like Mungwi if well-marketed could contribute to the development of the district and the country as a whole.
Mr Mwamba accused the Zambia Tourism Board (ZTB) of concentrating on marketing the Victoria Falls at the expense of other natural wonders.
“We need to balance, rivers like Mungwi River have nice rapids which if well marketed can generate a lot of benefits, after all the Victoria Falls is already known hence the need to spend resources and energies on other little known attractions,” he said.
There was need even for the local people such as teachers and others who could afford to invest in tourism resorts to do so rather than waiting for foreign investors.
“There is a tendency of always depending on foreign investors in all the sectors of the economy which is proving to be wrong.
“This is why our local currency has been badly hit because the economy seems to be run by foreign conglomerates who at any time can withhold certain monies,” Mr Mwamba added.
