ZAMBIA Cricket Union (ZCU) president Reuben Chama has expressed happiness that the sport will be played by orphans and vulnerable children in society.
This follows the request by Makeni Institute Trust Orphanage School to the ZCU to introduce the sport at the institution that caters for 94 orphans and vulnerable children aged between five to 12 years from the surrounding areas.
Chama said that it will be a historical occasion for ZCU because it was the first time the game of cricket was going to be introduced at an institute that looks after the orphans and vulnerable children in society.
According to a statement released by ZCU committee member Ng’andu Yandikani yesterday, the children were excited to receive the union officials whom they asked several questions concerning the sport.
Chama, who explained the basic rules of the game and the equipment used to the children, assured them that a development officer would soon be assigned to their school and coach them the basics of the game of cricket.
He also gave the school authorities and kids a brief history of ZCU, its aims and objectives of spreading the game of cricket throughout the country.
Makeni Institute Trust Orphanage School headmaster Yusuf Jogee said the school authorities were very pleased to have ZCU officials visit the school and that he was looking forward to a lasting partnership.
The school was founded in 2010 as an Islamic school which caters for 94 orphans and vulnerable children aged between five to 12 years from the surrounding areas of the school.
The founding of the school was to give the children an opportunity of getting basic education as well as teaching them religious values of the Islamic faith.
The main purpose of the visit to the school by the ZCU officials was to meet the school authorities and discuss the introduction of Cricket at the school upon their request.
