A FIFTY-FOUR-YEAR-OLD man of Chief Hamunadu’s area in Pemba District has been shot dead over suspicion of practicing witchcraft.
Benson Mutinga, of Hamweemba Village, met his fate on Wednesday around 19:00 hours while taking a rest in a shelter.
The incident happened in the same village where a trigger-happy man recently shot dead at point blank, three people at a funeral house and injured five others.
Southern Province Police Chief, Mary Chikwanda said in an interview yesterday that unknown people shot and killed Mr Mutinta.
Ms Chikwanda said that Mr Mutinta sustained gunshot wounds to the head and his back.
“Some family members, who rushed outside after they heard the gun shots found the deceased lying in a pool of blood with deep gunshot wounds on his head and back,” she said.
No arrests have been made, the police have instituted investigations into the matter.
In Kabwe, police are looking for a man who defiled a 12-year-old girl who was heading home from school.
The girl was dragged into a nearby maize field where she was defiled by a suspect only identified as Tumbo of Chowa Panga Township.
Central Province deputy police chief Edwin Bwanga said no arrest has been made but investigations have been launched and that the incident was reported by the girl’s father.
He appealed to the public to assist to bring the suspect to book.
