ZAMBIA Sugar Open champion, Lyle Rowe yesterday fired a sizzling six-under-par 66 to win the Mopani Copper Mines/Redpath Mining Pro-Am at Nkana Golf Club in Kitwe.
Rowe, who last year shot five-under-par 67 in the first round of the Mopani Zambia Open, announced his return to a familiar territory by scoring a stroke better and lead a team which had Fred Ndhlovu, Jolfan Zombe and Lumumbe Mumba into victory.
However, Rowe’s group needed a two-way-count-back to claim the first prize following a tie on 88 points.
Theunis Spangenberg, who last year grossed 10-under-par 62 on the first day last year, had the second best score in yesterday’s Pro-Am, which was the final warm-up before the prestigious Mopani/Redpath Zambia Open.
Spangenberg shot three-under-par 69 but in team event, Ryan Tipping, who carded an individual level-par 72, was second with retired Zambia Police commissioner, Lemmy Kajoba, Jackson Simukonda and Luciano Chomba.
Tipping’s team lost a count-back to the team led Rowe.
Morne Buys, who had one-under-par 71, saw his team of Collins Musonda, Humphrey Kabwe and Zaba Shoko finish third on 86 points after winning a count-back over Spangenbenberg’s team.
Spangenberg’s group consisted of Rob McMaster, Ian Smith and Allan Champion.
Today focus shifts to the Mopani/Redpath Zambia Open proper.
