KAFUBU Water and Sewerage Company (KWSC) has embarked on a project to install prepaid meters which will assist its clients to manage their water bills.
KWSC public relations officer Margaret Zulu, who confirmed the development in a Press release, said the project would be done in phases.
Under the first phase the water firm would target public institutions before extending the project to other clients next year.
“This will assist the institutions manage their current water bills,” Ms Zulu said.
Ms Zulu said that KWSC had engaged court bailiffs to recover unpaid water bills amounting to K142.5 million.
Of this debt domestic clients owe K85.5 million, with public institutions owing about K33.3 and K23.3 million by commercial properties.
She said that non-payment of water bills has had a negative effect on the operations of the company, as it was difficult to implement projects aimed at improving service delivery.
Ms Zulu said the cash plan which KWSC had introduced as a means of settling water bills had not yielded positive results.
She appealed to the defaulting clients to settle the outstanding debts or faced legal action.
